México es el país que más refrescos consume del mundo (y los de Coca-Cola-Femsa son los líderes). En algunos pueblos del desierto de Sonora (norte del país), cuando el calor aprieta, una persona puede llegar a beber al día cinco litros de Coca-cola, según los datos de Page Pliego. La media del país, de acuerdo a su investigación, se sitúa en 0,4 litros diarios por mexicano, una cifra que en Chiapas se multiplica. En los Altos, cada habitante se bebe 2,25 litros de refresco al día. De ahí que en la zona sean habituales envases extra-grandes no comercializados en todos los lugares.

La planta de Coca-Cola Femsa de San Cristóbal de las Casas es, además, una de las dos más grandes de México (la otra está en Tlaxcala, cercana a la capital), con acceso al agua garantizado pues está ubicada en las faldas del Huitepec (conocido como el “volcán de agua”). Según Page Pliego, además del pozo actual (con el que se embotella para suministrar a todo Chiapas y parte de Oaxaca y Tabasco) se está construyendo otro. Diversas organizaciones han denunciado acuerdos entre la compañía y las autoridades para acceder al agua a muy bajo costo, en un estado donde la disposición de este elemento provoca grandes litigios entre comunidades.

Chiapas es, por tanto, el mejor ejemplo de lo que se ha dado en llamar “coca-colización”, la invasión de los refrescos que, si no es la única causa de lo que los expertos califican como “nueva guerra del siglo XXI”, la epidemia de obesidad, sí es uno de los principales motivos de que en México, según los estudios de todos los expertos, el 70% de la población tenga sobrepeso y el 30 por ciento sean obesos.

En Chiapas, además, se da una combinación explosiva: alto consumo de refrescos y altos niveles de desnutrición. “La mayoría de los adultos mexicanos actuales fueron niños desnutridos con lo que su cuerpo se programa para la escasez y cuando de repente hay un exceso de azúcar el daño metabólico es terrible”, explica el doctor Abelardo Ávila, investigador del Instituto Nacional de Salud y Nutrición. Las consecuencias van de la diabetes a infartos, ceguera, amputaciones, reducción de la capacidad laboral…

Ever since reading Guthrie’s “The Nature of Paleolithic Art,” an ecological explanation of rock art forms is, for me, never too far from the visionary or shamanic—nor must the two be mutually exclusive. Foraging societies are steeped in natural history (and corresponding myths of “when the animals were people”). I know the Chumash spent much of their 13,000 year-long history eating a diet dominated by shellfish, urchins included, and that, ala Levi-Strauss, “what’s good to eat is good to think.” Note the circle within a circle in the figure’s chest, which resembles the “nested” appearance of the sea urchin’s mouth, as do the figure’s expanding “arms” and “legs” with the urchin’s shell pattern. Finally, consider the Chumash’s association of the sun with the sand dollar and its patterns. Their art, like their thinking, was probably homologous.

[UPDATE: Archeologist Al Knight has since directed me to Hoskinson’s 1983 article “Sand Dollars, Sea Urchins, and Chumash Rock Art.” So there is a connection.]

I love dresses and skirts! I have many, and I keep getting more. They are kind of freeing and cool for warm weather, except for the whole thing where if I do not have a buffer between my thighs they become awful. I own spanx not for their slimming/smoothing properties, but entirely to keep my own fucking legs from wearing holes into each other. Do you know what is not freeing and cool? A pair of spanx. Tights and hose are also awesome, but also not particularly freeing, as my tushie is vast like mountain, and finding ones that just…fit is a rare thing.

I’ve often thought that I should just get some lighter bicycle shorts, but I will also try some of these other ideas IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT THEY WOULD JUST. MAKE PRODUCTS FOR THIS.

Deodorant on thighs: I have not tried this but might, just to see how it goes.

Monistat anti-chafing cream: Not a miracle, but still pretty effective; like a good 85% relief. A really good option.

Cutting a pair of leggings into a pair of bike shorts for under my dresses: my no-shame this-is-a-thing-I-do-as-plan-A-mosta-the-time solution.

So Tuesdays are my Mondays, which means I came to work to a looong to-do list. I did find time to snap a quick pic of this ostrich neck + skull before it heads out - a nice young man bought him last week!

I always get really excited when a customer clearly loves what they’re buying. It’s a nice feeling to know that some bones are going to a good home, if that makes sense. A little overly sentimental, perhaps, but that’s just the sort of person I am.

The post right after mine about the vortex was me correcting it, oops. Sorry, bb.

Josephine Baker, later known as ‘Bronze Venus’, ‘Black Pearl’ and ‘Créole Goddess’ was born in America in 1906 and later moved to France to become a singer, dancer, and actress. She was the first African-American woman to star in a major motion picture, and became famous worldwide.

Though she grew up as a maid in wealthy white households she eventually became an exotic dancer in France, famously appearing in next to no clothing, and became a French citizen in 1937.

Ernest Hemingway referred to Baker as ‘the most sensational woman anyone ever saw’ and she received approximately 1500 marriage proposals in her life time. She became a muse for Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, and Christian Dior. She had a variety of exotic pets including a cheetah named Chiquita, a chimpanzee named Ethel, a pig named Albert, a snake named Kiki, a goat, a parrot, parakeets, fish, three cats, and seven dogs.

When WWII broke out, Baker became a volunteer spy for France, and assisted the French Resistance by smuggling messages written in invisible ink on sheet music. She made great efforts to aid those in danger of enemy attack, sent Christmas presents to French soldiers, and smuggled information she gathered in Spain back to France by pinning notes containing the information on the inside of her underwear. She was awarded the Medal of Resistance with Rosette and later named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.

Baker also aided many civil rights movements by refusing to perform to segregated audiences and storming out of a club in Manhattan with actress Grace Kelly after she was refused service. She worked with the NAACP and spoke at a Washington march alongside Martin Luther King Jr. as the only official female speaker. Baker was actually asked by Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow to take his place as leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, but Baker declined on the grounds her twelve adopted children ‘were too young to lose their mother’.

Baker died in 1975, four days after her final show, attended by such names as Mick Jagger, Shirley Bassey, and Liza Minnelli.

Oh and she was queer and had a relationship with Frida Kahlo. All around badass.

Kahlo was quite the ladykiller.
